For families who moved into the newer waterfront towers over the past couple of years, that drive fits into a normal weekday after school, not a special weekend trip across town.
Most of the classes within walking distance of Creek Harbour and Sobha Hartland cover the same handful of sports: football on a rooftop pitch, swimming in the community pool, gymnastics or dance in a studio. Kids who have cycled through two or three of those tend to be looking for something new: a different set of skills, a different kind of focus, teammates from a wider mix of backgrounds. Ice hockey covers all three at once. Skating trains balance and leg strength in a way running never does, the game rewards quick decisions on a surface that keeps moving under a player's feet, and a Galaxy locker room puts kids from 38 nations on the same ice together.
A first session starts with skating basics, not drills a 5 year old cannot follow. Coaches work with each player on balance, stopping and simple stick and puck touches, then build toward small games once the fundamentals hold. Kids from age 4 are welcome, and so are complete beginners who have never stood on skates before. Groups stay small, up to 18 players, so a coach can watch every child on the ice, not only the front row.
A full rental set, skates, stick, helmet and pads, waits at the rink, so there is nothing to buy before the first class. Warm clothes a child can move in are enough, and the coaches handle the rest. Hockey gear covers a young player from head to toe, and real physical contact does not start until age 12 to 14, so a first-timer at 5 or 6 is playing a non-contact version of the game, not stepping into anything rough.
Galaxy Hockey Academy trains 300+ players from 38 nations under professional coaches, in official partnership with the UAE Winter Sports Federation. The UAE will host the IIHF 2027 Division II-A World Championship in Al Ain, a genuine international tournament, in this country, in a sport most of the neighborhood has never tried. A child who starts now is getting in early on something with a bigger stage ahead of it than the average after-school class.
Galaxy Arena, our own arena in Oud Metha, is set to open in September 2026 (the date is not guaranteed), putting a second sheet of ice even nearer to Downtown, Business Bay and the Creek.
