The short answer

Skating from 3–4, hockey from about 4–5

Children can start finding their feet on the ice from around age 3–4, and structured hockey typically begins from about 4–5 — which is why our youngest team is U6. But there's no single "right" age. What matters more is that your child enjoys being active and wants to give it a go. Every child, whatever their age, starts with a free trial, and no skating experience is required.

What parents ask most

Too young, too old, or just right?

The honest truth: age matters less than you'd think. Here's what actually determines whether a child is ready — and why it's never too late to start.

Is my child too young?

If they can walk confidently and enjoy being active, they're usually ready to try. Ages 3–5 start with first skates and fun — no pressure, no rush. The free trial shows you how they take to it.

Are they too old?

Never. We welcome newcomers at U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, U18 and in adult classes. Plenty of players start later and catch up quickly with the right coaching.

Do they need to skate first?

No. Complete beginners are welcome, and many step on the ice for the very first time at their free trial. Our coaches teach skating and hockey from scratch.

No gear to buy

Skates, stick, helmet and pads are available to rent — nothing to buy to begin. When you're ready for your own kit, the pro-shop on the ground floor of Sport Society handles sharpening and gear.

Real ice, year-round

Sessions run on a full-size sheet of real indoor ice (60×30 m) at Sport Society, Mirdif — air-conditioned and open all year, so age and season are never a barrier.

Professional coaches

Every group is led by professional coaches who know how to bring a nervous three-year-old or a teenage first-timer up to speed — safely and at the right pace.

It's never too late

Any age can start today

Parents often worry they've "missed the window" — that their eight, twelve or fifteen-year-old is somehow too far behind to begin. They're not. Galaxy runs groups all the way through U6, U8, U10, U12, U14, U16 and U18, plus adult classes, and newcomers arrive at every one of them. A child who has never touched the ice can start at ten and thrive; an adult who always wondered "what if" can lace up for the first time in their thirties. The only thing that separates a player from a non-player is the first session — and that one is free. The Middle East's largest ice hockey academy is built to bring beginners of any age up to speed, on real ice, with professional coaches, in air-conditioned comfort all year round.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

What age can my child start ice hockey?
Children can begin skating from around age 3–4, and structured hockey typically from about 4–5 — our youngest group at Galaxy is U6. Every child starts with a free trial and no skating experience is required. Just send us your child's age on WhatsApp and we'll place them in the right group.
Is my child too young to start?
Probably not. Little ones aged 3–5 can start with first skates and fun on the ice, building balance and confidence before anything competitive. If your child can walk confidently and enjoys being active, they're usually ready to try. The free first trial is the easiest way to see how they take to it — no commitment.
Are they too old to start ice hockey?
No — it's never too late. We run groups all the way through U8, U10, U12, U14, U16 and U18, plus adult classes, and newcomers join at every age. Plenty of players start later and catch up quickly with professional coaching. Whatever the age, the first trial is free and beginners are welcome.
Do they need to skate before starting hockey?
No skating experience is required. Complete beginners are welcome and many children step onto the ice for the very first time at their free trial. Rental gear — skates, stick, helmet and pads — is available, so there's nothing to buy to begin. Our coaches teach skating and hockey from the ground up. If it helps, start with learn to skate first.
What age groups do you run at Galaxy?
Galaxy runs youth age groups U6, U8, U10, U12, U14, U16 and U18, plus adult classes. Younger groups focus on first skates and fundamentals; older groups move into development and competitive play. Message us with your child's age and we'll tell you exactly which group fits.
What is the best age to start ice hockey?
There's no single best age — what matters more is that your child enjoys being active and wants to try. Many children begin structured hockey around 4–5, which is why our youngest group is U6, and those early years are great for building skating and confidence. But plenty of players start later and thrive, so the honest answer is that the best age is whenever your child is keen. Every newcomer starts with a free trial, whatever their age.
Can adults learn ice hockey from scratch in Dubai?
Yes — completely from scratch. Galaxy runs adult classes for total beginners as well as returning players, so you can lace up for the first time in your twenties, thirties or beyond. No skating experience is needed, rental gear is available, and the same free-first-trial rule applies. See our adults page and message us to book.
How long does it take to learn to skate or play hockey?
It varies from child to child, but most beginners are moving around the ice with confidence within a few sessions, and steady skating comes with regular practice. Hockey skills — stickhandling, passing, playing games — build gradually on top of that. There's no fixed timeline: the more often you train, the faster it comes. The free trial is the easiest way to see how quickly your child takes to it.
