Every school in Dubai has a football pitch, most have a swimming pool, plenty have a climbing wall. None of them have ice. The GLXY School Hockey League changes that: the UAE's first competitive ice hockey league played between schools, run by Galaxy Hockey Academy on real indoor ice in Mirdif.
Galaxy is the UAE's only full ice hockey academy: more than 300 active players from 38 nationalities train on its ice, under professional coaches, in an official partnership with the UAE Winter Sports Federation. The academy has run programmes for children and adults for years. The school league takes that same ice and coaching staff and opens it to a different kind of team, one built around a school instead of a club.
The offer, in full
A founding school enters a team. Galaxy supplies the real indoor ice, professional coaches for every session, full protective gear sized to each player, a fixed game schedule against the other founding schools, and a league table that updates all season. The school supplies two things: players who want to try hockey, and a bus to bring them to the ice and back. The programme, the equipment and the coaching staff stay with Galaxy.
Players from 5 to 15 years old can join, grouped by age so every child plays against peers close to their own level. Nobody needs to have skated before. Most Galaxy players started exactly the same way: first time on skates, in a group with kids their own age, coached from zero by people who do this for a living.
Why a league between schools, and why now
Ice hockey in the UAE has quietly built a real base over the past few years: junior teams, an adult league, a national programme, and now a purpose-built home. Galaxy's own arena, Galaxy Arena, is a two-sheet, NHL-size facility opening in September 2026, the UAE's first dual-ice venue. A school league is the natural next step. It puts the sport in front of children who would otherwise never see a rink, using ice and coaching that already exist instead of asking a school to build a programme from nothing.
The timing carries some weight too. The IIHF World Championship comes to the UAE in 2027. Schools that join the GLXY School Hockey League for its first season, in the 2026/27 school year, will have a full season of games behind their players before the sport gets that kind of attention. Being early here means first pick of ice time, first say in how the league runs, and a place in a story schools can tell for years.
What a founding school signs up for
A morning on the ice explains this faster than any email. Galaxy offers a free ice morning for an interested grade: no gear needed, no experience required, a chance for a school to see what its own students look like on skates before committing to a season. From there, building a team is straightforward: interested players register, get grouped into an age division, and the school's slot in the schedule is set.
A limited number of founding spots are open for the first season. Schools that claim one now get a voice in details that later schools won't: which days work, how divisions are grouped, what the first season's calendar looks like. After that, it's a normal season: games, a table, and a growing group of kids from one school who now play a sport that, a few years ago, didn't exist here at all.
